Primeros Pasos works toward a more sustainable, integrated definition of healthcare.  We incorporate and combine clinical care, health education and community outreach programs as the critical steps that will lead us to our goal of healthy schools and healthy lives.  Our efforts focus primarily on children, however we have expanded our services to include parents, families, teachers and local representatives.

Healthy Schools Program
This program includes working with rural schools in the area to provide medical care.  Daily, classes from rural, underprivileged schools are brought to the clinic.  Prior to their visit, the students are given sample cups and asked to bring in fecal samples for analysis in the clinic’s laboratory.  During time designated for the educational programs, students are taken one by one to be examined by our physician, fourth year medical students attending the University of San Carlos Medical School or by medical staff from abroad. While at the clinic the children are broken into groups for educational classes about nutrition and hygiene.

Walk-in Consultation Program
This program is for all tose kids who are not in a school or daycare, as well as for tose who are over 18 years of age. These patients come to the clinic on their own and with a health complaint, they are examined by our staff and a medical file is made for record keeping. On top of the medical services, these patients can also receive dental, lab, psychological and educatinal services as well.

Health Education Program for Children
The main goal of this program is to teach children better higiene habits as well as preventive measures to ensure their queality of health is not compromise. Thourghout the school year health educators visit the schools providing one hour workshops on topics like: nutrition, higiene, sexual education, the envirionment, alcohol and drugs, domestic violence, natural desastres, and children’s rights. Each year Primeros Pasos provides over 500 workshops throughout the valley.  The workshops take place at the clinic or in the communities.

Health Education Program for Adults
This program consists of 4 workshops specifically developed for parents and/or caretakers of students already involved in the established school health program at the clinic.  The workshops are designed to address health issues and concerns effecting families and communities the clinic serves.  The mission of this program is to raise health awareness, provide information that may benefit participants and empower parents and caretakers with additional health-based knowledge that may improve the lives of themselves, their children and families.
